Learning in Room 12

This page is dedicated to letting you know what we are learning in Room 12.

Self Managers:
We are learning to work independently and become more responsible for our own learning.
This links in with the New Zealand Curriculum in the Key Competencies: Managing Self
How:
  • We have a time during the morning to self manage by completing some "Must Dos" and "Can Dos". These are independents tasks like doing our Sounds Alive practice, fitness, oral language etc. When we have completed our "Must Dos" (in the time given) we can do our "Can Do" activities. We are slowly adding more tasks to this time.
  • We also have time tables to follow during Writing, Reading, and Maths. This lets us work in a variety of ways - independently, with a buddy and in a small group. Mrs Harding will see us in a rotation and when we do see her it's quality teaching at the level we are at - rather than teaching at a whole class level.

Writing:
We are learning many things in writing!
  • Persuasive writing
  • Descriptive writing
  • Different kinds of sentences
  • Dictionary skills
  • Punctuation - remembering to use Capitals, full stops, commas etc in the right places
  • Editing and proof reading - making sure we check our work and fix it up

Maths:
We have a maths interchange. Depending on our interchange class will depend on whether we are foccussing on:
  • Addition and subtraction strategies
  • Multiplication and division strategy
  • Addition and subtraction basic facts
  • Multiplication and division basic facts

Reading:
We follow a program based on the Essential Resources book for 7-9 year olds. It works on a variety of ways to respond to the books that the children are reading.
These ways include:

  • Comprehension and Detail card
These cards help us to understand what goes on inside the book and remember the details of the story.
  • Reflection and Responding card
These cards help us to reflect what we thought of the story or aspects of the story. Then we respond by sharing what we thought with others.
  • Artist and Illustrator card
These are activities based on our books. These activities allow us to creatively show what we think about the books or let us show part of the story in a different way.
  • Language and Vocabulary
These activities are aimed at us studying the words in our books and then using them in various activities.

The Arts:
We are interchanging once a week to explore different art areas. Over the year we will have learned about each area.
  • Art
  • Drama
  • Dance
  • Music
  • Digital art

Physical Education:
We will be learning (as a team) different sporting skills and then playing the different sports. By the end of the term we will be so good and we will have an "Ultimate House Challenge" Oooooh yea!!!
